WHO HAS FAILED OUR EDUCATION; PARENTS OR TEACHER?

On Sunday, 11th May, 2013, at about 7pm, the question on this blog was

debated on CHANNELS TELEVISION in a program titled ‘Face Off’,  between

one Mr. Adegbola Johnson (a teacher) and Mr. Idada Joachim (a parent). The

heated debate that evening pointed accusing fingers to both parents and

teachers as the culprits responsible for the falling standard of education in

 Nigeria.

As a teacher and parent, I tried taking a more objective view. I tend to toll

the idea of Henry Steele Commage, who once said,  "Change does not

necessarily assure progress, but progress implacably requires change.

Education is essential to change, for education creates both new wants and

|the ability to satisfy them"

For me,  the constant falling of the standard of education in the country can be attributed to so

many factors, where all stakeholders tend to blame the other party on the issue-parents

blame  teachers  for lack of professionalism. The teacher on the other hand blames the parent

for not spending much time with the child.
We can assert that the system has under-

performed for sure.

The larger society accuses the government for its inability of to provide basic infrastructure and teaching facilities for quality education at all levels of the system.

Who says we can't cook!

However, the question that immediately arises is why is the system failing? Who has failed

our education? Are parents responsible? Could it be that most teachers are not

professionally qualified as teachers? Are students themselves free from blame, or do we

conclude that it is the government that has failed our educational system?- so much questions

 to think about.
